Hockey Wales is committed to ensuring all members of the local community can access high quality hockey. That’s why we are starting to develop some specific activity in areas with a high BME population.

For the last 12 months Hockey Wales have been an active member of the BME Sport Cymru Network and it soon became apparent that as a National Governing Body we needed to do more to reach out to certain community groups. We have recently supported a number of community programmes in Newport and Cardiff working with Local Authority colleagues, Community First organisations and national doorstep sport charity StreetGames.

C&M

The work demonstrated an appetite for hockey within BME communities and the need to take our sport to the masses rather than relying on traditional clubs to be their offer.

In June 2015 we were fortunate enough to receive some additional grant funding to support the development of 2 new BME specific hockey clubs, 1 in Newport and 1 in Cardiff.

We are hoping that this is just the start and more clubs of this nature will be established in the coming years.
