COMPETITIONS: 2008/9

U-16 Girls v Scotland

Wales travelled to Glasgow for a three test series versus Scotland U16 Girls over the Easter holiday.
11th - 13th April 2009

Match 1: Sat 11th April

Scotland 0 – Wales 2

In the first competitive match of the International season Wales found themselves under pressure for much of the first twenty minutes but the defence held well and Scotland did not profit. As the half progressed Wales achieve more penetration into the Scotland twenty five but were unable to convert it to a goal leaving the score at nil nil at half time. Wales started the second half the stronger team winning two penalty corners within the first ten minutes, getting shots off both times. Wales always looked the more likely to score and did so after nineteen minutes when a penalty corner was slotted in by forward Ellis Davies on the left hand post. Wales finished the game off with a fast strong break by Phoebe Richards who thumped the ball in past the advancing keeper to make the final score two nil to Wales.

Match 2: Sun 12th April

Scotland 2 – Wales 2

After defeat the previous day Scotland were out for revenge and started well scoring after just eight minutes. Wales were not disheartened about going one down though and followed that with a period of sustained pressure playing much of the rest of the half in Scottish territory. At only one nil down at half time it was all to play for. Wales kept pressing and were rewarded for their efforts when Joanne Westwood put the ball in from a penalty corner move after eighteen minutes. Buoyed up by the equaliser Wales continued to pass the ball well with confidence all over the pitch. This resulted in another penalty corner again converted by Joanne Westwood in a carbon copy of the previous goal. With nothing to lose the Scots girls pushed up and Wales let them have a shooting chance which they took to level the score at two all with just two minutes left to play.

Match 3: Mon 13th April

Scotland 0 – Wales 0

This, the third match in the three match series, was a tight affair from the start. In the first half Wales created several attacks but without directly troubling the Scotland keeper. The Wales defence was kept quite busy by Scotland, who had more than one shooting chance, but the Wales keeper was up to the task. The second half continued in much the same vein with both sides coming close to breaking the deadlock but it remained scoreless after the seventy minutes were up.
