'Howards' ensured they retained their title when beating their closest challengers Penarth in their final match 4-3. Howardian's now qualify for the 2009/10 EuroHockey Indoor tournament in which they also play in this season's tournament later this month in Lousada (POR).
In the final match of the 4 team, round robin tournament Kirsten Tedder opened the scoring for Penarth within the first minute but 2 goals from Charlie Robbins together with an Amy Owen goal made the half-time score 3 - 1 to Howardian. Lucy White scored for Howardian just after half time but Bridie Davies scored for Penarth in the 37th minute and this was followed by another Kirsten Tedder goal in the 39th minute The crowd were on the edge of their seats when Kirsten hit the post in the last minute but Howardian managed to hold on, to win 4 - 3.
Dowlais and Bridgend battled for third place. The score was 0 - 0 at half time but a flurry of activity half way through the second half resulted in some goals. Kate Nicholson scored for Bridgend in the 28th minute with Caryn Parker equalising for Dowlais in the 30th minute. Jo Poupon quickly responded on behalf of Bridgend by netting a goal in 31st minute, with end to end action, Janine Thomas equalised for Dowlais in the 40th minute.
Thanks to Cathy Jones, Dino Willox, Karen Evans and Marcus Powell for umpiring. We were privileged to have such a wealth of International experience - so far this season, between them, they have umpired indoors in Wales, England, Scotland, France and Lithuania.

Katie Perry recognised with Higgins UK Youth Award
At the Women's National Indoor Finals the WHU President, Anne Ellis presented Katie Perry with a Higgins UK Youth Award Certificate of Commendation, from the Hockey Writers' Club. The Higgins Awards recognise the outstanding boy and girl in youth hockey in the UK at age 18-and-under, and Katie is a worthy winner of this award being one of our promising young umpires. We look forward to watching her umpiring career develop.
