In a nail biting, heart in mouth style match against Poland; Wales have left the pitch heroes this evening; securing a 1-0 win over Poland and a place in the EuroHockey Championship II semi-finals.
An indescribably tense game for both teams, with promotion to the semi-finals at stake; both Wales and Poland showcased an epic display of determination to take their side through. The first half ended 0-0 after a total of three missed penalty corners across the two teams; and two very close goals from Poland.
The third quarter saw two heart pounding saves from GK Rose THOMAS after Poland were awarded two penalty corners in short succession. The game however came to a roaring end after a stunning field goal from #10 Phoebe RICHARDS in the 57th minute; securing Wales in the semi-finals.
Captain Abi Welsford told the BBC that “going into the tournament the plan was to always stick to their processes, keep going because something will happen eventually and tonight that was Phoebe scoring her goal”.
Head Coach Kevin Johnson explained there’s a resilience about Wales that’ll keep them going, with the intent to win every game they play and play them well.
He also credited Poland for their game today; stating they tested Wales well.
