Gold for Boys at UK School Games

The Welsh Boys claimed Gold at the UKSGs in Cardiff yesterday with a very hard fought 2-1 victory over a talented Ulster side. After their convincing 5-0 victory over Scotland and an historic 2-1 win over England on the preceding 2 days of competition, Wales started the match against Ulster tentatively. Ulster scored first and releasing the match ‘pressure’, Wales struck back quickly. Weathering a barrage of penalty corners, Wales went close with ‘break aways’ at the other end, securing what was to be the winner 15' from time. Captain Rhys Gowman collected the Cup on behalf of Wales in front of a passionate home crowd. The Girls competed well throughout the tournament but just came up short by the odd goal against both Scotland and Ulster, losing out to England by 2-0.

The noticeable improvement in performance of both squads is evidence that the restructuring of player and coach development in Wales is working. It provides incentive to new players and to clubs, schools and coaches to come on board with the structural changes currently underway. These will discussed further at the forthcoming Road Shows.
