NEWS FROM HOCKEY WALES: JULY 2010

Tony Rhys-Jones

It is with deep regret that we have to advise you that Tony passed away earlier this morning. Tony was known to a huge number of people within hockey and it was only a couple of months ago that he was seen supporting his beloved Cardiff & UWIC HC at the EuroHockey Clubs tournament in Cardiff. He was a lifelong member of Cardiff and acted in just about every role within the club, including Chairman. He was also one of the main instigators in forming the Ladies section of the club, Cardiff Athletic and played a huge part in the formation and running of the South Wales League and again, acted as that committees' Chairman for a number of years. He was also heavily involved with the South Wales Regional committee for a number of years.

Although he suffered a stroke some 15 years ago this did not deter Tony from attending as many matches as possible, usually in the company of his close friend Chris Fookes, his fellow Cardiff supporter, who sadly passed away last year. He was highly regarded by all who knew him and had already indicated his desire to become more involved with the club this coming season. He will be sorely missed by all involved with Welsh hockey and our thoughts go out to Tony's family at this very sad time.

The funeral will be held at 15:15 on Friday 23rd July at Rhiwbina Baptist Church, Lon Ucha, Rhiwbina, Cardiff, CF14 6HL and afterwards at Thornhill Crematorium at 16:15. Following the service, the family would like as many of Tony's friends to join them at the Manor Parc Hotel, Thornhill.  Family flowers only have been requested but any donations in lieu should be sent to the Stroke Association.
