NEWS FROM HOCKEY WALES: JUNE 2009

U-18 Girls European squad selected

The final Squad for the European Championships was selected at the training weekend over 13/14 June at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff. During the weekend and as part of the selection process, Wales entertained the Australian Under 18 squad who were on tour in the UK, following their 5-4 win over England the previous day in Nottingham. At 0-1 behind at half-time, Wales were quite confident that, if they could score first after the break, then everything was possible. Alas, Australia managed to make it 2-0 six minutes into the second half, which controlled the outcome of the game. Wales were still in selection mode, so therefore the result was unimportant in relation to giving a number of players extra pitch time to see how they reacted to international competition. Two late goals meant that Australia ran out worthy winners although Ceri Jenkins went close on a couple of occasions towards the end in an attempt to reduce the deficit.

Wales now have a training day on the 20th; a training weekend on the 27/28th and a holding camp before flying out to Madrid in order to fine tune the squad before the start of the tournament.
