WHU 'Sticks and Stars' a massive hit

'Stix with Stars' Brecon 2010

Players at the Brecon 'Sticks and Stars' session

Welsh Hockey launched the 'Sticks and Stars' programme this half term. 'Sticks and Stars' is an exciting new coaching series led by a WHU qualified coach and supported by a current Welsh Senior International player.

Powys and Pembrokeshire hosted the first official 'Sticks and Stars' days where more than 100 players benefited from top class coaching. Players also heard from senior internationals who shared their experiences of representing their country and also gave advice on what it takes to get to the top. The sessions were run from 10am – 4pm and each player received a t-shirt, certificate and skills card on completion.

Dawn Mitchell, Abi Welsford and Sophie Trigg were the stars from the Welsh Senior Women's squad and WHU's Vicki Sutton was the head coach for the three days. Vicki said: "...the 'Sticks and Stars' programme got off to an extremely good start, it was fantastic to see so many budding hockey players really getting to grips with the days theme which was looking after the ball". Katie Hamer and Angela Miles, Hockey Development Officers for Powys and Pembrokeshire respectively were both delighted with the programme.

More 'Sticks and Star's days will be held in May half-term, Summer holidays and October half-terms and will travel around Wales.
