NEWS FROM HOCKEY WALES: MAY 2010

Wales Euro Play-off Weekend

This weekend sees the top Welsh teams in action at the National Hockey Centre (Sophia Gardens, Cardiff) to determine qualification for next year's club European tournaments. The standard of hockey promises to be high, with the chance of representing Wales in Europe at stake.

For the women, Swansea take on cup runners-up UWIC on the Saturday to book a place in the ranking game against Penarth on Sunday. Swansea will be buoyed after recently securing their English National League status for next year through the play-offs, but will come up against a confident UWIC side who ran Penarth close in the cup final, taking them to extra-time and penalty strokes. Penarth will be looking to finish their season on a high after winning both the league and the cup competitions this season.

The men's competition involves three Cardiff-based teams, with Cardiff & UWIC playing Cardiff University on the Saturday. Cardiff & UWIC will want to build on their 5th place at the recent EuroHockey Club Trophy in Cardiff, whilst the students will try to carry on their success in their BUCS league this season. The winner of this will play Whitchurch on the Sunday, achieving 4th place in the English National League West Conference and winning the Welsh Cup this season.
