NEWS FROM HOCKEY WALES: JULY 2009

Wales test Spain

In a two match test series against Spain (World ranked number 3), Wales came away with two defeats but with heads held high. Although the scoreline in the first match (1-6) might suggest that Wales were outplayed, this was certainly not the case as it was only due to a devastating 5 minute period in the second half during which Spain scored three times playing very fast attacking hockey that the scoreline took on a flattering appearance. Wales were equal to the hosts in most areas with Rick Gay scoring with a trademark penalty corner. In the second match played in 30+ degrees Wales ran the hosts close and despite conceding after just 7', Lewis Prosser deflected in the equaliser early in the second half. With the full strength Spanish squad against them, Wales continued to pressurise the opposing defence but could not find the final touch. Spain scored twice to prove that mistales at this level will be punished to run out winners 3-1.

Wales can take heart from the matches and following a two day training camp at the excellent Spanish facilities will be looking forward to the EuroNations Trophy at Wrexham over 1st/8th August at Wrexham.
