Four goals from Andy Cornick helped underpin Celtic Panthers’ first victory of this year's GreatBritain Super League, beating the Highland Jaguars 6-3 at Peffermill Playing Fields in Edinburgh on Sunday.
The Hampstead and Westminster player opened the scoring in only the second minute when he dribbled into the D and fired home, and he added another four minutes later, when he dribbled to the left byline and fired in at an acute angle. The Jaguars hit back on 19 minutes with Glynhill Kelburne's Josh Cairns scoring from a penalty stroke, but the Panthers restored their two-goal cushion just two minutes later, Cornick scoring again from the spot to complete his hat-trick.
Cairns struck again on 41 minutes from a penalty corner after Ciaran Crawford had been tripped while heading into the D, and Glynhill Kelburne’s Kenny Bain levelled the scores on 42 minutes when he scored with a reverse stick shot from the left. However, Panthers kept the pressure up, and Cornick added his fourth from a penalty corner. He had gone through to the byline once again, but his shot went across the face of goal and out. From the resulting corner, he struck from the top of the D.
Loughborough Students' Owain Dolan-Gray ensured there was more than one name on the score sheet with a 52nd minute goal, having deflected in a shot from outside the D, and on the hour mark Exeter University’s Rufus McNaught-Barrington scored with a drag flick into the bottom left corner to give his side a 6-3 verdict.
"We've been working hard on getting patterns right," said Panthers' manager Nazir Mohamed. "And today it worked really well. We've got better as the tournament has progressed and I'm pleased with our work this weekend. The younger players and the new players have all done really well."
