Youngsters reap the benefit of URDD-WHU Hockey Partnership in North West Wales
The 3 year URDD-WHU hockey project for Anglesey and Snowdonia, managed by URDD Sports Development Officer Aled Jones, and launched in February 2008, is already producing some excellent outcomes, with two school tournaments taking place during November.
On Wednesday 5th November, over 7 teams competed in the Eifionydd Hockey Festival held at Glasfryn Leisure Centre, Porthmadog. After an exciting round of games Ysgol Borth-y-Gest emerged as worthy winners. Many thanks to Tecs and Cari for umpiring on the day. Hopefully all these schools will now compete in the Activate National Primary Schools tournament!
On Tuesday 18th November three of Anglesey's secondary schools came together to compete in the inaugural Urdd-WHU Hockey Tournament, sponsored by Stena Line. 5 teams took part in a round robin competition with Ysgol Gyfun LLangefni 1's coming out on top after winning all four games. The tournament was used as an opportunity to develop several young umpires, including two of the WHU's new Youth Hockey Activators - Bethan Till and Matt Rogers. A hockey session for local secondary school children is now running on Thursdays from 5-6pm at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, Llangefni.
