Wales v New Zealand
As part of their preparation for the forthcoming 4 Nations tournament in England, New Zealand (World ranked 7th) played a training game against Wales. The first half was goalless with both sides struggling to string passes together, although the Welsh keeper Iwan Williams was the busier and had to make two fine saves to deny the Kiwis. In the second half both sides started to find spaces to work with and New Zealand struck their first goal in the 46’ after a defensive lapse again was heavily punished. Within a minute Wales conceded a second from the Kiwis 4th penalty corner. Goals continued to flow from New Zealand as in the 50’ they scored a third after a fast counter when precision passing opened the welsh defence and added a 4th in the 60’. Wales did create chances in the last quarter but could not finish. Wales certainly held their own for the first 45 minutes but once again conceded goals in quick concession.

Wales U21 Women find it tough going in the Celtic Cup
The Wales U21 Women were on the receiving end of some uncompromising hockey at the Celtic Cup in Cookstown. Whilst Wales managed some good moves and movement during each of their 3 matches, they were punished for not taking chances and for losing possession. There were some good individual performances but every player will need to step up to the plate if their capability is to be realised. Indeed, this was a wake up call on the value of maintaining possession and making it count against some strong teams which, if they learn from it, will stand them in good stead for the European Trophy at the end of July.
