Inspire and enthuse

Improve your own game and inspire others to take part and develop in the game of Hockey.

Coaching – Make it happen on the pitch!

As a coach you have the ability to inspire and enthuse all generations to get involved and stay involved in hockey.

Playing hockey is a great thing to do and many people find that actually coaching hockey can also be a hugely rewarding experience. A great coach doesn’t necessarily have to be a highly skilled player.

Being a coach means having an understanding and passion for hockey as a whole. A great coach has gained valuable experience and the ability to provide players with the right knowledge at the right time. Coaches are a crucial part of development within the sport.

Coaching can be done through the many levels of the Hockey for Life Framework; from grassroots and local play all the way to elite performance. Coaches are needed to help players succeed at every level.

1. How do I get involved?

Regardless of which level you want to coach at, Hockey Wales offers something for everyone. If you feel you have the desire and ability to coach at a senior international level, developing the future talent or you want to get stuck in within a club environment working with juniors or adults, there is a wide-ranging education and training programme to suit your needs and support you.

To find the right course for you please look at the 'How to Qualify' section.

2. Coach Membership

Hockey Wales is proud to offer a Coaches Membership. This is currently priced at £24.00 and covers your affiliation to Hockey Wales, provides civil liability insurance to the value of £1,000,000 as well as other membership benefits.

It also has the advantage of giving you capital benefits of £10,000 whilst coaching at any club or school.

It is extremely important that your club affiliates you as a coach on the Hockey Wales membership system (My Hockey Wales).  The fee for coaching membership will be included in their annual fee.

For individuals not associated to a club, they can get the same benefits from registering as an independent Hockey Coach member.

To find out more, simply visit our Membership page.

3. Additional Coaching Insurance

Whilst coaching, it is your responsibility to make sure you are covered for any and all activities undertaken. Insurance is there for a reason; to protect you and the people you coach.

Additional to the previously mentioned civil liability and capital benefits insurance, additional Coaching insurance is available for £55.65.

More information about insurance cover can be found here

4. Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Check

If you intend to work with children whilst coaching hockey, then it’s recommended that you undertake a DBS Enhanced Check.

For more information on the process, please contact Chris Brewer at chris.brewer@hockeywales.org.uk.

5. What do I need to coach hockey?

This depends on what role you want to fulfill.

I want to start coaching with conditioned games, with plenty of support

4689 Leadership Award

Hockey Wales has introduced 4689 as a progressive, stage-not-age based hockey format.

  • Starts with 4 v 4, moving into 6 v 6, 8 v 8 and finally 9 v 9
  • Size of the playing area and number in a team gradually increases as the children's ability improves
  • Flexible and accessible - no need for special equipment / playing areas
  • Introduces children to coaching and umpiring from an early stage
  • Goalkeeping introduced at the advanced level, with some fun enabling activities to encourage all children to give goalkeeping a go.

This course is an introductory coaching course for hockey. The course is suitable for students, teachers and coaches of all levels. The course is flexible and can be designed around the needs of the learner. For example, for teachers, the course can be tailored around the national Curriculum and the 4689 resource that supports this.

This course comes with access to a full website, with free resources.

This qualification does not allow individuals to coach outside of this format, and 4689 leaders will be allowed to take advantage of the Hockey Wales Membership offer.
