Umpiring is an integral part of hockey. The ability to regulate and maintain the game from an objective viewpoint requires strong convictions and a passion for the sport.

The first step to becoming a hockey umpire is first to determine a course that meets your needs. This means taking your first step on the Hockey Wales workforce pathway.

Whilst on the pathway, you’ll be given all the opportunities needed to enhance your skills and umpiring knowledge.

There are several levels at which you can progress. All awards are recognised throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

  1. Level 1 Umpire Award
  2. Level 2 Umpire Award
  3. Level 3 Umpire Award
  4. National Award
  5. Umpire Coaching
  6. Community Chest
  7. Book onto a course

1. Level 1 Umpire Award

Level 1 is suitable for those with some experience of playing hockey and may have had some practice with umpiring previously.

Completion of the award is based upon the following:

  • Completion of a course portfolio
  • Attendance of all sessions
  • Successful 15-30 minute off-course assessment

Umpire mentoring is also available to support learners going through the course.

Duration - 7.5 hours

Cost £85.00

5. Umpire Coaching

Hockey Wales & WHUA offers access to umpire mentoring at all levels, whether you are new to the game or at the elite end of the spectrum. This mentoring gives you high quality input and feedback, along with tips and guidance at a pace appropriate to the level you are umpiring at.

6. Community Chest

Community Chest funding is available to clubs looking to support their members to through coaching qualifications. Amounts to the sum of £1500 per annum is available for clubs to support a variety of club development needs of which Umpiring development is one,
