VISION 2020 is the driving force of Hockey Wales work as it moves towards the year 2020. We are committeed to making Hockey bigger, better and more engaging than ever before and the VISION is our way helping us get there. It's not just us though who will be going on this journey, we need the hockey family to come together and support this ambitious project if we are to succeed. Read on to find out more!

VISION 2020 is the 9 year vision for Hockey in Wales.

VISION 2020

Hockey Wales has set a bold, ambitious VISION for 2020 which was launched in October 2011.  There are 4 key outcomes of VISION 2020; they are to achieve:

  1. 60,000 people in Wales are members of Hockey Wales
  2. Every young person of school age enjoys a quality Hockey experience
  3. Wales is consistently ranked in the top 10 in Europe (seniors) and provides between 2 and 4 players to the GB squads for the Olympic Games
  4. We have a fit for purpose workforce of coaches, umpires, officials and volunteers able to meet the demands and provide a high quality experience

The Hockey Wales strategy ‘Winning On and Off the Pitch’ outlines what we are trying to achieve between 2013-2017, it identifies 4 big themes of work to focus on and then within each theme outlines some key actions. The 4 themes are as follows:

  1. High Performing Hockey Family
  2. Vibrant Workforce
  3. Growing the Game
  4. High Performance (teams and individuals)
Winning On and Off the Pitch

Planning in this way will help us to provide an outline of what everyone involved in Hockey across Wales is working towards. This approach will help us prioritise our time and efforts in the right areas and make sure that Hockey is a successful, attractive and family friendly sport for life.

2. What are we trying to achieve?

We are trying to make our sport great, to make it bigger and better for everyone to enjoy.

How will we know if we have succeeded?

There are 4 main areas we will measure our success by, these are:

  1. 60,000 people in Wales are members of Hockey Wales

2 Year Priorities

Hockey Wales currently plans its business plan two years in advance and within each of the 4 themes of the strategy there are key priorities that shape the operational plans year on year.

Strategic Plan

VISION 2020

Regional Structures

Key to the delivery of VISION 2020 will be the new regional structures in both North and South Wales. In the future there will be one overarching Regional network that will be responsible for the delivery of hockey across the region. Excellent progress has been made in North Wales and from September 2012, the current Men's and Women's associations will formally merge into one new Regional Board responsible for creating and implementing a Regional Plan for North Wales. The Regional Board will be provided with the appropriate resources (both human and financial) to deliver what is needed for North Wales within the framework of the Hockey Pathway. The new regional structure in South Wales will follow over the next 1-3 years.

Key to the process of devolving resources and decision making to the regions are a set of principles that have been jointly developed and agreed and are as follows:

  • The Hockey Pathway is the driver for all planning and decisions ensuring players are at the centre of all we do
  • Regional plans will have a flexible regionally owned approach within a national ‘Hockey' pathway
  • Efficient and decisive regional decision making will be core
  • The balance of investment will reflects regional priorities
  • Our work will be value based and will encompass trust, leadership, devolvement, effective decision making
  • There will be clear roles and responsibilities with clear, accepted and owned accountability
  • The Regional board will be cohesive and regionally driven

The Wider Context
In developing a longer term VISION for Hockey in Wales we aspire to secure the short, medium and longer term role that Hockey plays within Wales as a major sporting partner contributing to the sporting health and wellbeing of the nation. The Vision for Sport in Wales clearly sets out two major focuses

  1. Every Child Hooked on Sport for Life
  2. Wales is a Nation of Champions

Hockey has a role to play in both of these as a major team sport for men and women, boys and girls.

What will Members see as a result of VISION 2020?
As a result of setting a clear vision, resources will be targeted into the areas most in need of support and development. Some examples of this will be:

  • A localised decision making approach ensuring members are heard, supported and integral to the future of our sport at local, regional and national level
  • A Wales wide team of Community Coaches responsible for increasing participation and improving school – club links
  • Staffing deployed into the regions that will assist the Regional Board, clubs, schools and other partners to implement the needs of the regional plan
  • Club forums across Wales put in place to support clubs in their local areas
  • A player development system that identifies, supports and promotes individual players to achieve their potential locally, nationally and within Great Britain Hockey
  • A reviewed competition structure ensuring the Hockey Pathway is available to everyone across Wales
  • Hockey will be profiled across Wales and seen as a brand individuals and partners want to be part of, invest in and support

Moving Forwards
VISION 2020 was launched on the 1 October 2011 and is followed by a series of road-shows across Wales in October. Within the road-shows, Hockey Wales also launches itself as the new name for the National Governing Body of Hockey in Wales. This is a milestone opportunity to launch not only a logo but the start of a new brand.

A word from Karen Evans

Karen Evans‘This is an exciting time for all the hockey family to get involved. The Board and staff have worked so diligently over the past 12 months to ensure the foundations of VISION 2020 are in place, working initially with North Wales and hopefully soon with South Wales too. We are all working hard to make sure this happens and with the Olympics soon to be upon us, what better way for us to promote Hockey Wales than to bring to the fore VISION 2020 and a new strategy to drive Hockey Wales forward.'

The launch of VISION 2020 through the road-shows is just the beginning... watch this space as there is so much more to come!!
