Hockey Wales are delighted to announce the selection of Fred Newbold, Owen Sutton, Millie Holme and Betsan Thomas for the Great Britain Elite Development Programme (EDP) Training Squad for 2024.
Launched in September 2017, the purpose of the Great Britain Elite Development Programme is to provide players who have the potential to become medal-winning Olympians of the future the best possible opportunity to achieve their international hockey ambitions.
Fred Newbold, Millie Holme and Betsan Thomas have all retained their places in the performance squad, whilst Owen Sutton joins the setup for the first time.
Selected players are immersed in a best-versus-best training and competition environment that supports the development of future senior internationals. The programme is delivered by senior international coaches and some of the best coaches from across the country.

All 4 players were delighted with their selection to the programme with Fred Newbold commenting: “It feels great to be selected again for the EDP. I’m looking forward to really pushing on this year and seeing how far I can develop. I want to talk all I’ve learnt from the programme into the summer and beyond looking ahead to the future with Wales and hopefully Great Britain.”
Millie Holme’s selection to the programme comes after she helped Exeter HC secure promotion to the Premier League. Holme who has 26 Senior international caps for Wales said: “It’s extremely rewarding for my hard work and dedication to hockey to be recognised this way. I have enjoyed a brilliant year of hockey and. I am proud to represent Wales within this new squad and I’m excited to see where my hockey journey progress.”
Both Owen Sutton and Betsan Thomas made their Senior Welsh debuts in 2023 and are “honoured” to have been recognised for their performances with spaces in the GB EDP squad.
