RALPHH defibrillator installed pitch-side at the National Hockey Centre

Hoci Cymru has installed its free defibrillator from national charity RALPHH, with the vital resource overlooking the playing area at the National Hockey Centre at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

The defibrillator was handed to Hoci Cymru CEO Paul Whapham last year, and has now been installed in a weatherproof box to support our performance athletes, club members, and school teams during training and matches.

“With the National Hockey Centre hosting around 160 matches across the year, the generous support of RALPHH has ensured that we have this necessary support in place for players and members,” commented Paul.

“Hockey, among both men and women, is a sport that continues to grow in popularity and the facilities at Sophia Gardens can only be enhanced by hoping for the best and preparing for the unexpected.”

Alongside Hoci Cymru, seven hockey clubs across Wales have also opted to take up the gift of a defibrillator from RALPHH.

We urge all our clubs to take advantage and install this potentially life-saving equipment at their facilities. Some clubs who have done so already are also enjoying the benefits of portable defibrillators, for away fixtures.

Richard Allen, Chairman of RALPHH, commented:

“With hockey being such a fast and dynamic game, the efforts made by players is considerable and it is right that proper precautions are in place to safeguard players, coaches and spectators’ safety.

“Hockey is showing the way in Wales, but we also hope to hear from other sports, just as we do in other parts of Britain.”
